Your route to Kings Point

What does it take to earn a USMMA appointment?

For the standard U.S. applicant route, meet eligibility and academic requirements, complete the academy application, pursue a congressional nomination, pass the Candidate Fitness Assessment, and resolve medical qualification. USMMA also publishes a limited Secretarial appointment route, explained below.

01

Academy application

Your school record, SAT or ACT, teacher evaluations, activities, and writing establish the academic and personal case for admission.

02

Nomination process

Congressional applications have their own requirements and deadlines. Track them alongside your USMMA file.

03

Fitness and medical

Prepare for the CFA, schedule authorized examinations, and follow official requests through to completion.

Start before you have a nomination. Keep the three tracks moving together. A submitted application, a nomination, and an appointment are three different milestones.

01 / Understand the mission

Kings Point combines maritime training and national service.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York, prepares licensed maritime officers and future military officers. Your interest should connect to that mission, its technical education, and life at sea.

A college degree

A Bachelor of Science built around technical coursework, professional preparation, and leadership development.

A maritime license

Preparation for a U.S. Coast Guard merchant marine officer license in a deck or engineering pathway.

Commissioning preparation

A route to reserve service and opportunities to compete for active-duty commissioning. A preferred military branch or specialty is not guaranteed.

Official academic program and graduation credentials

Understand the service commitment before applying.

The standard maritime route includes a five-year service or employment obligation, maintaining the merchant marine officer license for six years, and an eight-year reserve obligation. Active-duty military service is an authorized way to meet the employment obligation. Other maritime employment must meet applicable approval rules; it is not an unrestricted choice of civilian jobs.

Read the complete service-obligation contract and approved pathways

Three questions to answer honestly

  • Would I still want Kings Point if my first-choice active-duty assignment were unavailable?
  • What interests me about operating ships, engineering systems, maritime trade, or strategic sealift?
  • How have I shown the discipline and reliability a team needs when working far from home?
02 / Separate eligibility from competitiveness

Merchant Marine Academy admission requirements

Basic eligibility

  • U.S. citizenship for the standard domestic applicant route
  • At least 17; your 25th birthday must not have passed before July 1 of the entry year under USMMA’s published age rule
  • Good character and the suitability, security, and physical requirements for a Navy Reserve commission
  • Scholastic preparation and a completed application

Confirm borderline age or unusual eligibility circumstances directly with Admissions. Specially authorized international applicants follow separate instructions.

Review official eligibility

High school course preparation

USMMA lists at least 15 total credit units, including:

  • 3 units of English
  • 3 units of math covering algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • 1 laboratory course in chemistry or physics

Pre-calculus or calculus can satisfy the trigonometry requirement. USMMA recommends four years of math, including calculus, and both chemistry and physics.

Review official scholastic requirements

Resolve a missing course early. Review the transcript and senior schedule with your counselor. Ask Admissions about an acceptable way to complete a required subject while there is still time to act.

Already in college or applying from a homeschool? Use the specific evaluation and transcript instructions in the current application guide. College applicants should also review the additional academic criteria on the scholastic requirements page.

03 / Free academic planning tool

1. Your testing

Use official or practice results consistently. Practice scores help you plan; official reporting follows Admissions instructions. ACT scores are not converted into estimated SAT scores here.

2. Courses completed or scheduled by graduation

Use your school’s credit units; confirm equivalence with your counselor.
Algebra and geometry must also be covered.
Leave blank if your school uses a different scale.

Why this is a planner: a test score cannot capture your transcript, school context, teacher evaluations, leadership, state competition, nomination, fitness, medical status, or Admissions judgment. Use the result to choose concrete actions.

USMMA requires the SAT or ACT. Send scores using SAT code 2923 or ACT code 2974. The academy sets qualifying scores for each entering class. The current guide describes superscoring.

Freshman and sophomore years

Build preparation and responsibility

Plan the math and lab-science sequence. Read, write, stay physically active, and contribute consistently to a team, job, service project, or family responsibility.

Junior year

Test, explore, and organize

Establish a testing baseline, learn about maritime careers, research visits, identify nomination offices, and maintain a record of your work and results.

Summer before senior year

Prepare the file

Open the application when available, speak with evaluators, develop essay ideas, train for a complete CFA, and assemble nomination packets.

Senior fall

Submit and verify

Finish candidate-controlled items, follow up on school submissions, meet nomination deadlines, and schedule authorized medical examinations.

Senior winter

Close the gaps

Audit the portal, keep proof of submission, coordinate permitted updates, and complete the CFA while time remains for a retest if needed.

Spring and summer

Maintain every condition

Continue strong grades, fitness, and conduct. Follow any offer conditions and reporting instructions, while keeping other college and commissioning options current.

05 / Free application checklist

Build your USMMA action plan

Check an item only when you have completed it or verified official receipt. Progress reflects this planning checklist, not admission eligibility or an academy score.

Only these checkbox selections are saved in this browser. They do not update your USMMA portal.

06 / A Kings Point distinction

USMMA nominations are based on your state.

A Representative from another district in your state may nominate you to USMMA. Ask whether that office accepts out-of-district requests; permission in academy rules does not establish the office’s application policy.

01

Identify eligible offices

Begin with your state’s Senators and your Representative. Review other in-state House offices where appropriate.

02

Track each process

Record the office deadline, submission method, essay prompts, recommendation requirements, interview details, and confirmation of receipt.

03

Present an informed preference

Explain your interest in Kings Point accurately. Be ready to discuss maritime service, Sea Year, technical study, leadership, and your actual academy preferences.

Accepted nomination sources differ by academy. USMMA does not accept Vice Presidential, Presidential, ROTC, or other military service-connected nominations. Applicants in D.C. and U.S. territories should use USMMA’s applicable Delegate or Resident Commissioner guidance.

Limited Secretarial appointments

USMMA states that the Secretary of Transportation may appoint up to 50 qualified applicants annually, including applicants without a congressional nomination. There is no separate application. Complete the required file and discuss this authority with your regional Admissions Officer; it is a limited selection route, not a substitute for pursuing eligible congressional opportunities.

Official nomination and Secretarial appointment guidance · Territory and D.C. instructions

07 / Build a complete file

USMMA application, evaluations, and activities

Coordinate school evaluations

The standard high school file uses one counselor or school-official evaluation and three teacher evaluations: English, math, and lab science from chemistry or physics.

  • Ask evaluators before entering their details
  • Provide an accurate context sheet and deadline
  • Check that portal requests reached them
  • Verify receipt without writing their evaluations
Official evaluator requirements

Show responsibility and results

For each activity, explain your time commitment, progression, responsibilities, and contribution. Employment, family responsibilities, athletics, service, scouting, JROTC, and the arts can all provide meaningful evidence.

“Organized a volunteer program” becomes more useful when you explain whom you led, what changed, and what you learned. Use accurate numbers and distinguish completed work from plans.

Get help organizing your resume

Give academic context

Make sure the transcript, school profile, course schedule, and evaluations tell a consistent story. Explain course availability, unusual grading systems, or a disruption through the appropriate school or portal channels.

The optional resume supports the activities section. Treat both as part of one accurate record, rather than leaving important portal entries blank.

Review the current file instructions

Prepare for nomination panels and admissions conversations.

Be able to explain why Kings Point, what a deck or engineering officer does, how Sea Year works, and what service you are accepting. Use specific examples when discussing leadership, a mistake, a difficult teammate, or a time you carried an unglamorous responsibility.

The public application checklist does not list a universal BGO-style interview for every USMMA applicant. Follow any interview request from Admissions and each nomination office.

Explore academy and nomination interview preparation
08 / Free essay planning and word-count tool

Write a USMMA essay that answers the full prompt.

The required essay is at least 500 words. Address why you want USMMA, your curriculum preference, career interests, relevant preparation, and your understanding and acceptance of the service obligation. The optional adversity essay is 500 words or fewer.

Official essay requirements. The current application guide prohibits AI-generated essays and includes an AI-use acknowledgment. Write your own essay and follow the portal’s instructions.

Build from evidence

Identify a real experience that explains your interest or readiness. Describe your decisions and work, connect them to a curriculum or career interest, and explain what you learned.

Maritime experience can help you explain fit. An honest account of what you have researched and why it matters is stronger than claiming experience you do not have.

Show informed commitment

Explain the service obligation in your own words and connect it to what you intend to contribute. Discuss Kings Point specifically enough that the essay could not simply be renamed for another college.

Explore essay planning and feedback

Check length and review your coverage.

This tool counts words and provides a self-review checklist. It does not write or grade your essay.

This tool does not save or transmit the draft. Keep your own copy before leaving. Its whitespace-based count may differ slightly from the portal.

09 / Prepare for the complete assessment

USMMA Candidate Fitness Assessment

Kings Point uses the six-event CFA. Train for the assessment in order, including its timing and rest periods, and arrange an authorized administrator before you need the official result.

1. Basketball throw

Develop technique and power. Practice the prescribed kneeling position and measurement procedure.

2. Pull-ups

Use strict authorized form. Follow current instructions for any permitted alternative.

3. Shuttle run

Rehearse the course, turns, start, and finish on an appropriate surface.

4. Modified sit-ups

Practice the required range of motion and cadence under the official time limit.

5. Push-ups

Build repeatable form under fatigue. Invalid repetitions can distort a practice score.

6. One-mile run

Develop pacing and endurance after the preceding five events.

USMMA permits an Admissions Field Representative, J/ROTC instructor, physical education teacher, or commissioned/non-commissioned officer to administer the CFA, excluding a parent or guardian. Passing results must reach the academy by the application deadline. A failed test may be retaken within the permitted timeline.

Applying to another academy? Ask for your authorized CFA results to be sent to USMMA and verify receipt. The academy’s current guide explains score sharing; completing a test for another academy does not automatically update every portal.

USMMA fitness and administrator requirements · Current score-sharing guidance

Swimming preparation belongs in your plan.

USMMA requires fourth-class midshipmen to demonstrate a 100-yard swim using two basic strokes and 15 minutes of flotation before their first shipboard training period. The CFA itself has no swimming event. If swimming is a weakness, arrange qualified instruction and supervised practice.

10 / Follow official medical instructions

DoDMERB and USMMA medical qualification

Begin authorized medical processing early. Examinations, additional information requests, and waiver review can take time; an unfinished medical file can affect an otherwise strong application.

01

Become eligible for scheduling

Follow Admissions’ instructions for the application, transcript, and test information needed to initiate processing.

02

Complete examinations

Use the assigned scheduling process and keep copies of official communications.

03

Answer requests accurately

Provide the records or evaluations actually requested. Answer medical-history questions completely and honestly.

04

Track the final status

Monitor the DoDMERB portal and USMMA communications, including any authorized waiver process.

DoDMERB determines medical qualification under the applicable standards. USMMA states that waiver processing may be initiated for competitive applicants with disqualifying conditions. Follow Admissions’ directions; a waiver is not assured.

Official USMMA medical and waiver guidance · DoDMERB / DMACS applicant portal

Keep military and maritime qualification distinct. Kings Point’s pathway also leads to a Coast Guard-issued merchant mariner license. Maritime medical certification has its own standards and process. Direct questions about those requirements to USMMA and the Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center.

11 / Research the actual experience

USMMA majors, Sea Year, and life at Kings Point

The curriculum, regimental responsibilities, and shipboard training should inform your decision to apply. Research the work before choosing a major only by its title.

USMMA’s five published undergraduate programs
Program Professional direction A question to investigate
Marine Transportation Deck officer / third mate preparation Do navigation, ship operations, and maritime business interest me?
Maritime Logistics and Security Deck officer preparation with logistics and security study How do ports, cargo systems, and maritime security connect?
Marine Engineering Engineering officer / third assistant engineer preparation Would I enjoy operating and troubleshooting a ship’s machinery?

Sea Year is professional training.

Midshipmen work aboard operating vessels and complete academic projects. It is an opportunity to learn reliability, technical skills, judgment, and cooperation in a working crew.

Explore the Sea Year program

Your sailing split affects the calendar.

Sea service totals approximately a year and is divided into periods. USMMA’s published A, B, and C splits place sea terms differently, with some extending into first-class year.

Review the current sailing schedules

Visit with useful questions.

Ask about plebe academics, sea projects, mentoring, regimental duties, campus activities, and realistic career pathways. Compare what you hear with your expectations.

Schedule an official day or overnight visit

Questions for a midshipman or Admissions Officer

  • What surprised you about the academic pace and required technical courses?
  • How do midshipmen manage sea projects alongside shipboard work?
  • How should a prospective deck or engineering major investigate the choice?
  • How do sailing splits affect athletics, family plans, and campus activities?
  • What should I understand about reserve service and active-duty selection?
12 / Make an informed family plan

USMMA costs, financial aid, and other routes

The federal government funds tuition, room and board, uniforms, and textbooks. Families still need a plan for personal services, required kits, supplies, travel, and other expenses.

Budget beyond tuition

Review the current fee and cost-of-attendance pages. Use the figures for your entering year rather than assuming an older fee schedule will apply.

USMMA’s financial-aid FAQ says midshipmen do not receive a regular monthly salary or stipend on campus; sea-term pay may differ.

Fees and expenses · Financial-aid FAQ

Understand sponsored prep

USMMA’s sponsored program uses a year at New Mexico Military Institute or Marion Military Institute and currently provides $10,000 toward attendance. Selection is through the USMMA application.

Sponsored candidates reapply and must meet the program’s academic, physical, medical, and endorsement requirements.

Official sponsored-prep requirements

Keep other college and commissioning applications moving. If maritime work is your central interest, investigate MARAD’s state maritime academy information. Compare each school’s licensing, commissioning, cost, and service terms individually.

13 / Ownership and accountability

Help the candidate lead the process.

The candidate should own

  • Portal entries and communication with Admissions
  • Essay content and an authentic voice
  • Evaluator requests and respectful follow-up
  • Fitness preparation and interview readiness
  • Research into maritime careers and service

The family can support

  • A master calendar and weekly accountability
  • Travel, testing, and examination logistics
  • Accurate medical-history gathering
  • Financial-aid and college planning
  • A calm review of what remains unfinished

Common mistakes to catch early

  1. Waiting for a nomination before opening the academy application.
  2. Overlooking a required chemistry or physics lab course.
  3. Assuming one congressional packet covers every office.
  4. Writing an essay that never explains the maritime mission or service obligation.
  5. Preparing individual CFA events without practicing the full sequence.
  6. Treating “submitted” as proof that every school and evaluator item arrived.
  7. Missing official messages while a medical request or offer condition remains open.
  8. Allowing another person to become the primary voice of the application.

Merchant Marine Academy admissions FAQ

How hard is it to get into USMMA?

Kings Point is selective. Academic preparation, evaluations, character, leadership, nomination or appointment authority, fitness, and medical qualification all matter. Build the strongest complete file you can and keep other options moving.

What is the Merchant Marine Academy acceptance rate?

A valid rate divides offers of admission by applicants for the same cycle. The academy’s Class of 2029 announcement reports 281 entering plebe candidates, not the number of offers. That figure alone cannot establish an acceptance rate or your personal chances.

Official Class of 2029 announcement
What GPA and SAT scores do you need for USMMA?

The published Class of 2029 SAT averages were 632 Math and 632 Verbal. Averages are not eligibility thresholds. For high school applicants, review course rigor, grades, rank, and current testing instructions together; college applicants have additional academic criteria.

Official scholastic requirements
When is the USMMA application deadline for the Class of 2031?

The completed application deadline is February 1, 2027. Congressional nomination receipt is due January 31, 2027. Follow the current guide and portal for later grades, permitted testing updates, and medical processing.

Official application deadline
Does USMMA require a congressional nomination?

A congressional nomination is the standard route. USMMA also publishes a limited Secretarial appointment authority that can include qualified applicants without a congressional nomination. Discuss it with Admissions and pursue eligible nomination opportunities.

Official nomination guidance
Can a Representative outside my district nominate me to USMMA?

Yes, if the Representative is from your state of residence or domicile and accepts your request under the office’s own procedures. USMMA’s state-based rule permits this; it does not require an office to accept an out-of-district application.

Can I use a Vice Presidential or Presidential nomination for USMMA?

No. USMMA does not accept Vice Presidential or military service-connected nominations, including Presidential and ROTC nominations.

Who completes the USMMA teacher evaluations?

The standard high school file requires English, math, and chemistry-or-physics lab-science teacher evaluations, plus the counselor or school-official evaluation. College and homeschool applicants should use their specific guide instructions.

Official evaluation requirements
How long should the USMMA essay be?

The required essay must be at least 500 words and address the published prompt, including the service obligation. The optional adversity essay must be 500 words or fewer. Use the portal’s current wording and instructions.

Does USMMA use the CFA, and can I share another academy’s results?

Yes. USMMA uses the six-event CFA and accepts authorized results from another participating service academy through its instructed sharing process. Request the transfer and verify receipt. A passing CFA is required by the application deadline.

Official CFA requirements
Do I need to know how to swim before going to Kings Point?

Learn to swim before arrival if possible. USMMA requires a 100-yard swim using two basic strokes and 15 minutes of flotation before the first shipboard training period. Swimming is separate from the admissions CFA.

Is USMMA tuition-free, and do midshipmen receive a monthly stipend?

The government funds tuition, room and board, uniforms, and textbooks. Other attendance costs remain. USMMA’s aid FAQ says midshipmen do not receive a regular monthly salary or stipend on campus, although sea-term compensation may differ.

Official financial-aid FAQ
Can USMMA graduates enter active-duty military service?

Yes, active-duty commissioning is an available pathway subject to selection and applicable requirements. Admission to Kings Point does not guarantee a particular military branch or career assignment. Review the full service obligation before applying.

Official service-obligation guidance
How does USMMA sponsored prep work?

Candidates are considered through the USMMA application; there is no separate direct prep application. The sponsored year uses NMMI or MMI. Students must reapply and satisfy the published program conditions for the following year’s appointment.

Official sponsored-prep program
What is the difference between USMMA and the Naval Academy?

USMMA centers on licensed maritime officer preparation and maritime or military service pathways. USNA centers on preparation for Navy and Marine Corps commissioning. Compare the curriculum, training, service commitment, and work you want to do after graduation.
