Army ROTC Scholarships
Understand Army ROTC scholarship requirements, board deadlines and award types. Compare four-year and three-year funding, research Active Duty and Reserve or Guard routes, and build a practical plan to become an Army officer.
How do Army ROTC scholarships work?
Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps combines a college degree with officer development. Cadets complete Military Science, physical training, leadership activities and required military training while preparing for a commission.
A scholarship helps pay eligible college costs for its authorized terms. It does not replace college admission, medical qualification, contracting or the work required to continue toward commissioning. Families should understand the degree, service route and funding timeline together.
College admission
Apply to each college separately. Confirm that your intended school and degree work with an Army ROTC host battalion or an approved partner.
Scholarship selection
Complete the applicable national or campus process. Read the school choices, duration and conditions on any award.
Activation and continuation
Meet contracting, medical, fitness, academic and other program requirements. Ask when benefits begin and what could delay them.
Choose the responsibility before the funding. Learn what Army officers do, how they lead Soldiers, and how service affects family life and personal preferences. A sound scholarship plan should support a service decision you can explain honestly.

Army ROTC scholarship types: national, three-year, campus and Reserve routes
| Route | Who should research it? | Key decision |
|---|---|---|
| National high school scholarship | Eligible college-bound applicants in the current national cycle. | Complete the portal and supporting steps for a national round. Review the offered school choices and funded years. |
| Three-year Advanced Designee · 3AD | National applicants offered funding beginning in sophomore year. | Fund freshman year and meet the participation and qualification conditions before activation. |
| Campus-based scholarship | Students already in college or exploring a later entry. | Talk to the Recruiting Operations Officer about eligibility, degree time remaining and available funding. |
| GRFD / Minuteman | Applicants deliberately pursuing Army Reserve or National Guard service. | Understand the Reserve Component commitment, nomination process if applicable, and SMP requirements. |
| Green to Gold | Eligible enlisted Soldiers pursuing an officer route. | Use the current Soldier-specific program, eligibility rules and deadlines. |
What does a three-year Advanced Designee scholarship mean?
A 3AD award normally starts scholarship benefits in sophomore year. The published procedures require freshman-year college and ROTC participation, academic performance, qualification and the appropriate recommendation before activation. Do not read “three-year scholarship” as freshman tuition plus two more years.
Ask the battalion to walk through the written conditions, including cumulative college GPA, Military Science performance, medical clearance, fitness and contracting. Keep a first-year budget that works without an upgrade or early activation.
Award types and 3AD conditions: USACC Pamphlet 145-1, §2-2f. Additional routes: Reserve/Guard scholarship guidance · Green to Gold.

Army ROTC scholarship requirements: GPA, testing and applicant status
GoArmy publishes a 2.50 unweighted high school GPA checkpoint for high school applicants. Testing remains part of the application, but current incentives policy removed the old numerical SAT/ACT minimums.
| Requirement | Published checkpoint | Your next action |
|---|---|---|
| High school GPA | At least 2.50 unweighted for applicants applying while in high school. | Confirm the reported unweighted record with your counselor. A weighted number is not a direct substitute. |
| Testing | The current national application landing page lists SAT, ACT or CLT. Policy does not supply the former SAT/ACT numerical cutoff. | Use the accepted-test and score-validation instructions in the live portal; confirm CLT processing with the ROO if using it. |
| Age and citizenship | U.S. citizenship; at least 17 and under 31 in the commissioning year under the published general rule. | Ask about your actual timeline and any route-specific exception. This page does not adjudicate waivers. |
| Education and admission | High school diploma or equivalent, plus college admission and an approved ROTC/degree arrangement. | Apply to the college separately and confirm your degree timeline with the battalion. |
| Fitness, medical and other conditions | Required scholarship assessment; later fitness, medical, conduct, contracting and continuation conditions. | Follow the current form, official medical instructions and the written offer. |
Meeting a checkpoint does not describe your scholarship odds. Improve the record you can document: coursework, testing, sustained responsibility, athletics or fitness, service and your explanation of why you want to lead Soldiers.

Army ROTC scholarship deadlines and board dates
The national application opened June 14, 2026. Start an application no later than March 4, 2027 for final-round eligibility, then meet the applicable completion deadline below.
| National round | Application / document milestone | Board review dates |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | October 12, 2026 | October 19–23, 2026 |
| Round 2 | January 18, 2027 | January 25–29, 2027 |
| Round 3 · final | Start the application by March 4, 2027; complete required items by March 8, 2027. | March 15–19, 2027 |
Coordinate the PMS interview early enough for its evaluation to be processed. A board meeting date is not a safe last day to request records or schedule an interview. Ask what “complete” means for your file and confirm accepted receipt.
Published procedures distinguish being boarded from later consideration: an applicant is boarded once and, unless selected, can remain under consideration in later rounds of the cycle. Ask the ROO how updates and your actual portal status are handled.
Calendar: official GoArmy scholarship dates, also published by The Citadel Army ROTC. Review process: USACC Pamphlet 145-1, §2-2. Campus and Reserve-focused routes can use different calendars.

How to apply for an Army ROTC scholarship
Enter the official application and identify your ROO.
Start through the national scholarship portal if that route fits your status. Record a Recruiting Operations Officer contact and read the current checklist before gathering forms.
Choose real college and degree preferences.
Army unit guidance describes up to seven university preferences. Use the live portal’s instructions, confirm affiliations and apply to colleges separately. Include a financially workable option and degrees you intend to complete.
Coordinate school records and accepted testing.
Request the transcript and school-official information specified in the application. Verify the reported GPA, score documentation and receipt status. Do not assume the Navy or Air Force evaluation package is the Army package.
Complete activities, written responses and any assigned CBEF.
Describe sports, service, work, family duties and leadership accurately. Complete the Cadet Background and Experience Form honestly if assigned. Answer the current prompts in your own voice and proofread for clear meaning.
Arrange the Army scholarship PFA and PMS interview.
Use the current assessment form and an authorized administrator. Schedule the interview with enough time for processing, and prepare specific examples of judgment, responsibility, teamwork and growth.
Verify readiness and respond to official follow-up.
Confirm accepted supporting items and complete-file status for the intended round. Follow medical instructions when directed. Review any offer’s funded start, school options, benefit election, activation conditions and service terms.
Build a useful activities record
For each experience, record dates, approximate time, actual responsibilities and a result you can explain. Sustained work or family obligations can show responsibility even without an impressive title.
Separate an activity you joined from a team or project you helped lead. Give the reviewer enough context to understand your contribution.
Write with ownership
Begin with the application’s current prompt and limit. Answer directly, support your point with a specific experience, and explain what you learned or changed.
Use feedback to improve clarity while keeping the facts and authorship your own. An accurate, thoughtful response is more useful than military language that does not sound like you.

How Army ROTC reviews scholarship applicants
The national process reviews more than GPA or a test total. Academic preparation, activities, the interview, fitness, the CBEF and board judgment contribute to the published framework.
| Published category | Maximum listed points | Productive preparation |
|---|---|---|
| SAT / ACT | 249 | Use accepted testing, deliberate preparation and accurate score reporting. |
| Scholar, athletics and leadership | 201 | Document coursework, participation, actual responsibility and contribution. |
| Interview | 200 | Explain service motivation and real examples clearly. |
| Selection board | 350 | Build a coherent, complete and accurate record. |
| CBEF | 250 | Complete assigned background questions honestly. |
| Physical Fitness Assessment | 150 | Prepare consistently for the actual scholarship events. |
| Published total | 1,400 | Unknown official ratings should not be replaced with self-awarded points. |
The dated table names SAT/ACT; the current national portal also lists CLT. Follow current processing instructions rather than assuming an unverified CLT conversion or predicting the Army’s official score. No cut line or personal award probability is established here.

What does an Army ROTC scholarship pay for?
Published policy allows a tuition/mandatory-fee election or a room-and-board election. The standard room-and-board rate is $12,000 per regular academic year, with separate allowances subject to current eligibility and contracting.
| Benefit | Published support | Budget checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and mandatory fees | Up to full authorized tuition and mandatory educational fees. | Confirm which billed fees are authorized and which costs remain outside the election. |
| Room and board | $12,000 annual flat rate: $6,000 per semester or $4,000 per quarter, elected in place of tuition/fees. | Confirm funded terms, the election and disbursement. Do not add this primary benefit to full ROTC tuition coverage. |
| Books | $1,200 per academic year under the published package. | Verify eligibility, payable terms and timing; keep costs before activation in your plan. |
| Contracted-cadet stipend | $420 per month for up to ten school-year months under current public guidance. | Ask when contracting and payment eligibility begin. A 3AD offer does not automatically fund freshman-year living expenses. |
| College-funded incentives | Some schools offer separate grants or other support. | Get written terms for eligibility, renewal and interaction with ROTC and other aid. |
Full tuition is not automatically a full ride. Housing, meals, supplies, travel, personal expenses and uncovered fees still matter. Ask financial aid how ROTC affects existing scholarships and whether money is available before a bill is due.
Benefits: USACC Regulation 145-1, §2-7; GoArmy benefits; Cadet Command allowance guidance.

Army ROTC colleges, majors and cross-town participation
Confirm the actual ROTC affiliation, host battalion and degree plan for every college preference. A university’s reputation is only one part of the decision.
Academic fit
Choose a degree you want to finish and a college where you can handle the coursework. Confirm admission to the specific program and how Military Science fits the schedule.
Battalion fit
Ask about mentoring, tutoring, leadership development, first-year expectations and support when a cadet struggles. Speak with current cadets when possible.
Financial fit
Compare the actual award, remaining costs and an affordable alternative. Verify any school-funded support and whether it continues if ROTC funding changes.
Can I choose any major?
Army ROTC does not use Navy Option’s three-tier major framework. Your exact degree, scholarship terms and commissioning timeline still require approval. Ask about special conditions for nursing, language or other targeted opportunities before selecting the major in the application.
Nursing and medical interests
Army nursing students should confirm the approved nursing program, admission sequence and scholarship conditions with the battalion and nurse counselor. A general award does not guarantee admission to a clinical program.
If you hope to attend medical school later, research the Army’s current Medical Corps Scholar and educational-delay guidance. Later medical training and approval are separate; ROTC does not automatically reserve a medical-school place.
Host battalion vs. partner-school participation
A student at a partner school may travel to a host campus for some ROTC events. Ask exactly where and when PT, Military Science, labs and required activities occur. Include parking, transportation and class conflicts.
Use the portal’s current preference rules; unit guidance describes up to seven schools. Read the approved options on the award. A request to move a scholarship to another college requires approval.

Army ROTC fitness test, DoDMERB and activation requirements
The June 2025 scholarship PFA scorecard records one-minute push-ups, one-minute modified sit-ups and a one-mile run. It differs from the academy CFA and the later Army Fitness Test.
| Scholarship event | What is recorded | Preparation action |
|---|---|---|
| Push-ups | Correct repetitions in one minute. | Practice the prescribed position, range of motion and stopping rules. |
| Modified sit-ups | Correct repetitions in one minute. | Use the actual arm position and repetition standard on the current scorecard. |
| One-mile run | Minutes and seconds on the measured course. | Confirm course length and permitted conditions. The linked form does not authorize a treadmill. |
The scorecard allows an adult not related to the applicant to monitor the assessment and recommends someone experienced, such as a JROTC instructor, coach or PE teacher. Follow the current portal and form for administration and submission.
Application fitness and later standards
Prepare consistently for the actual scholarship events. Then learn the current Army fitness and body-composition requirements applying to contracting and continuation. Ask the battalion which standards and dates apply to your arrival and contracting year.
Medical qualification is separate
Follow DoDMERB instructions when directed and respond to additional requests. An offer does not establish medical qualification, a waiver or permission to activate funding.
Ask what happens to your college bill if clearance is delayed. Program and medical authorities make those decisions.
Basic Camp and Advanced Camp
Basic Camp can support certain later-entry pathways when Basic Course credit is needed. Advanced Camp serves a different stage of officer development. Your battalion determines the training sequence for your timeline; neither is a universal requirement to enlist before applying.
Official resources: scholarship PFA form and instructions · current Army Fitness Test information · Basic Camp · Advanced Camp. Family guidance: DoDMERB and waivers · free medical quick reference.
Army ROTC scholarship interview preparation and practice questions
Prepare to discuss why you want to serve, what you have done when others relied on you, and how you respond to setbacks. Learn the officer’s responsibilities alongside the application process.
Know your motivation
Explain why the Army and why ROTC. Research more than one branch and understand that a scholarship does not promise your preferred job or component.
Use real stories
Prepare leadership, followership, teamwork, failure and integrity examples. Describe the situation, your judgment, action and result.
Show humble confidence
Respect other applicants and credit teammates. Listen carefully, answer the actual question and admit what you still need to learn.
For a peer’s mistake or misconduct, show compassion as well as standards. A private conversation may be an appropriate start; understand the situation, explain concern for the person and team, and seek guidance when needed. If a past response could have been better, explain how you would act now.
A backup plan should describe a financially sustainable college route and continued work toward commissioning. If reapplying to an academy, consider rigorous first-year coursework, leadership, service and ROTC where available. Do not assume a later award or appointment.

Army ROTC Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, GRFD and SMP
These terms describe different arrangements and conditions. Understand the intended service component and contract before comparing funding alone.
| Term | What it describes | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Active Duty | Full-time Army service after commissioning and required training. | Does this award permit competing for Active Duty, and how does selection work? |
| Army Reserve / Army National Guard | Reserve Component service with drilling, training and mobilization responsibilities. | Which component and unit arrangement applies, and what is the drilling obligation? |
| SMP | Simultaneous ROTC and eligible Reserve/Guard membership. | What membership, training, pay, benefits and terms apply to my status? |
| GRFD | Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty scholarship/contract designation. | What Reserve Component commitment applies, and how does it limit Active Duty options? |
| Minuteman | A Reserve-focused scholarship route with an authorized nomination and other conditions. | Who may nominate me, what is the deadline, and what SMP and service requirements attach? |
SMP is not simply another name for a scholarship. Combining benefits depends on the exact award, membership and rules. Review them with the ROO and responsible Reserve/Guard contact before enlisting or signing a Reserve-focused agreement.
GoArmy describes an eight-year total military obligation for scholarship recipients, with arrangements depending on award and component. Minuteman guidance describes eight years of post-graduation drilling service. Do not substitute a generic “four years” summary for the actual contract.
Research Army branches and later training commitments as well. An interest in aviation, medicine or another specialty does not reserve that path when a scholarship is selected.

What is an Army ROTC scholarship?
It funds eligible college costs in connection with Army officer development. Cadets complete a college degree and ROTC requirements while preparing to commission. National, campus-based, Reserve/Guard and Soldier programs have different entry and service conditions.
When is the Army ROTC scholarship deadline for 2026–2027?
For fall 2027 entry, the published document deadlines are October 12, 2026; January 18, 2027; and March 8, 2027. An application must be started by March 4, 2027 for final-round eligibility. Confirm interview processing and required-item acceptance through the portal and battalion.
Is it too late if I missed the first Army ROTC board?
The published cycle includes later rounds. Identify the next achievable document cutoff, coordinate dependencies early and verify that your file can be complete. Later consideration does not guarantee selection, and final-round applicants must also meet the application-start cutoff.
What GPA do I need for an Army ROTC scholarship?
GoArmy publishes a 2.50 unweighted high school GPA checkpoint for high school scholarship applicants. Meeting it does not establish competitiveness or complete the other eligibility requirements. College scholarships and activation conditions require their own review.
Does Army ROTC require a minimum SAT or ACT score?
The March 2025 incentives policy removed numerical SAT/ACT scholarship minimums, while testing remains part of the application. Do not treat older 1000 SAT or 19 ACT references as the current national minimum. Your college may impose separate admission requirements.
Does Army ROTC accept the CLT?
The current national scholarship application landing page lists SAT, ACT or CLT. Some general Army overview text still lists SAT/ACT. Confirm the accepted test and score-reporting process in your current portal with the Recruiting Operations Officer, especially before relying only on CLT.
What does an Army ROTC scholarship cover?
The standard benefit election supports authorized tuition and mandatory educational fees or a room-and-board alternative. Published policy lists a $12,000 annual room-and-board flat rate, plus separate book and contracted-cadet allowances under current conditions. Read the benefit and funded terms on your offer.
Does Army ROTC pay for room and board?
A room-and-board election is available under the applicable scholarship rules in place of tuition/fees. Published policy lists $6,000 per semester or $4,000 per quarter, totaling $12,000 for a regular academic year. Confirm election, term eligibility and payment timing with the battalion.
What is a three-year Advanced Designee scholarship?
A 3AD national award normally begins benefits in sophomore year after the required freshman-year participation and qualification conditions are met. It is not a freshman-year scholarship. Build a first-year funding plan and review the academic, fitness, medical and approval requirements with the battalion.
Can a three-year scholarship become a four-year scholarship?
Do not budget on an upgrade. Ask the battalion about current policy and any written change to your offer, but plan using the funded start and duration you actually have. The cost tool can compare different confirmed scenarios.
Can I join Army ROTC without a scholarship?
Ask the host battalion about non-scholarship enrollment, participation and contracting requirements. Campus-based funding may become available, but enrollment does not guarantee an award. Contracted non-scholarship cadets and students simply taking introductory classes have different conditions.
Can college students apply for Army ROTC scholarships?
Yes. Contact the Recruiting Operations Officer about campus-based opportunities and the time remaining in your degree. A later entrant may need Basic Course credit or Basic Camp. The high school national board calendar is not a universal campus-scholarship deadline.
Do Army ROTC cadets have to major in engineering?
Army ROTC does not use Navy Option’s three-tier major framework. Confirm that your exact degree, school and commissioning timeline are approved, including special nursing or other program conditions. Choose a major you intend to complete and can explain honestly.
How many colleges can I list on the national application?
Army ROTC unit guidance describes up to seven university preferences. Follow the current portal. Verify affiliation and admissions fit for every choice; the eventual offer controls your approved school options, and a placement change needs approval.
Does an Army ROTC scholarship guarantee Active Duty?
An award is not a blanket guarantee of Active Duty or a particular branch. Standard and Reserve-focused awards have different conditions, and later accession decisions apply. GRFD and Minuteman routes are designed for Reserve Component service.
What is the difference between SMP, GRFD and Minuteman?
SMP describes simultaneous ROTC participation and eligible Reserve/Guard membership. GRFD refers to a Reserve Forces Duty commitment. Minuteman is a Reserve-focused scholarship route with a nomination process. These terms are related but do not name the same benefit or application.
Is a Minuteman nomination a congressional nomination?
The standard national Army ROTC scholarship does not use the academy congressional-nomination process. Minuteman has its own authorized nomination sources and requirements. Ask the Reserve/Guard scholarship contact which route and nomination apply to you.
What fitness test is used for the Army ROTC scholarship?
The linked June 2025 scholarship PFA form records one-minute push-ups, one-minute modified sit-ups and a one-mile run. Use the current portal form and administration instructions. The scholarship PFA, service-academy CFA and later Army Fitness Test are different assessments.
What happens in the Army ROTC interview?
The PMS or an authorized interviewer assesses your motivation, personal qualities and officer potential alongside the required process. Prepare real examples of leadership, followership, setbacks and integrity. Follow the battalion’s scheduling and paperwork instructions.
What is the Cadet Background and Experience Form?
The CBEF is part of the published national application framework. Complete any assigned form honestly and follow its directions. Trying to manufacture a preferred personality or memorize a consultant answer key undermines an accurate application.
Does Army ROTC require JROTC, a nomination or Basic Training?
JROTC and an academy congressional nomination are not requirements for the standard national scholarship application. Basic Training is not a universal prerequisite for civilian applicants; Soldier, SMP and other routes have their own requirements. Ask about your specific path.
How long is the Army ROTC service commitment?
Army scholarships carry a total military obligation, with component and active/drilling arrangements determined by the route and signed agreement. GoArmy describes an eight-year obligation; Minuteman guidance describes eight years of post-graduation drilling service. Specialized training can add commitments.
