United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Admissions: Step-by-Step Guide

Training leaders of honor, integrity, and service for careers in the maritime industry and the Armed Forces.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, is unique among the service academies. Graduates earn a commission as an officer in the U.S. Armed Forces and a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner License, opening doors in both military and civilian maritime careers. The United States Merchant Marine Academy graduates officers in both the military and the merchant marine. The merchant fleet is composed of commercial ships owned and operated by United States companies and registered under the American flag - critical to the international trade and transportation system! The service obligation after graduation provides the most flexibility of all federal service academies! Graduates can choose to work either 5 years in the U.S. maritime industry, serving 8 years as an officer in any reserve unit of the Armed Forces. Additionally, graduates may serve for 5 years on active duty in any of the nation’s services - including occupations such as becoming a submarine officer, a Navy or Air Force fighter pilot, or a Marine Corps infantry officer - to name a few!
